Association of Education and Child Development Researchers Officially Launched

An organization initiated by lecturer at the Faculty of Islamic Religion, Muhammadiyah University, Jakarta (FAI UMJ) Dr. Suharsiwi, M.Ag, who actively researches Children with Special Needs (ABK). The Child Education and Development Research Association (PP2A) was officially launched on Sunday (08/10/2023).

PP2A is a professional institution, containing several administrators from lecturers and researchers who are concerned with children. The programs that PP2A will promote include research collaborations, seminars, journals, consultations and counseling aimed at parents and children.

Apart from Suharsiwi as Director of PP2A, another UMJ lecturer is included in the organizational structure, namely Dr. Ati Kusumawati, M.Si., Psychologist, in the field of Education and Counseling. The launch of PP2A was held with a webinar entitled Fulfilling the Rights of Children with Special Needs in the Family Review of Psychology, Education, Law and Religion.

The webinar presented a series of speakers, namely Dr. Suharsiwi, M.Pd. and Dr. Fal. Arovah Windiani, SH., MH. (Jakarta Muhammadiyah University), Dr. Weny Savitry S Pandia, M.Sc., Psychologist (Atma Jaya University), and Dr. Hani Sholihah, M.Ag (Chair of LP2MI INU Tasikmalaya).

All sources believe that crew members need appropriate action that starts from the family. As stated by Dr. Weny Savitri S Pandia, M.Sc., Psychologist, said that family resilience is needed because if the family does not get the right action, the child will experience more difficulties.

In this case Dr. Hani Sholihah, M.Ag., and Dr. Fal. Arovan Windiani, MH., explained children's rights from the perspective of state law and Islamic family law. Children with special needs have rights like the rights of children in general as stated in the Al-Qur'an and the 1945 Constitution.

This was explained by the speakers based on applicable laws both in state institutions and religion. Dr. Fal Arovah Windiani, MH., emphasized that the rights of children, including children with special needs, must be fulfilled by parents, families, communities, the state, government and regional governments.

"Children's rights are the most important human rights and must be recognized and protected by law. For example, education for children with special needs is still expensive and unaffordable. It should be borne by the government. "Getting an education is a child's right," said Arovah.

Another obstacle for ABK is when facing the world of work. According to Suharsiwi, every business world should provide employment opportunities for children with special needs. "However, it turns out that in general employment opportunities for people outside of crew members are also difficult, especially for crew members," he said.

Head of PP2A Trustees Prof. Akhsanul In'am, Ph.D., via video conference expressed his pleasure because ABK activists, especially from PP2A, carried out more focused studies. "Hopefully this will continue to be done and the launch of PP2A will provide benefits," he said.

Akhsanul shared several successful ABK stories as examples. "This shows that children's education and development must be observed and monitored so that children's development is as expected," he said.

Furthermore, he hopes that every study, discussion and research carried out can produce output in the form of articles and reference books. The launch and webinar, which was attended by academics, practitioners and ABK education activists, was very interactive. Participants and resource persons shared their experiences in handling crew members and provided suggestions.
